Background
The Academy was founded in 1955, its object being the promotion and search for new knowledge in aerospace medicine, and the contribution to international co-operation among those devoted to education and research in this particular field.
Membership is limited to 275, but such number has never yet been reached. Members-to-be undergo a selection process and are elected solely on merit, regardless of their nationality, race, creed, ideology or political belief. Candidates must be graduates from an accredited Medical School who have made an outstanding contribution to aerospace medicine and/or hold an eminent position in the subject and/or in the allied sciences.

GOALS: Annual Performance Targets
- Support the development and application of scientific knowledge, and to promote and enhance health, safety and performance of those involved in aviation and space activities
- Provide continuing education and scholarship opportunities to facilitate career development, operational effectiveness and the sustained implementation of the IAASM mission
- Deliver a professional research and education based scientific program, that addresses pertinent issues, in a unique international Congress, on an annual basis.
- Cultivate and expand relationships to improve global outreach and advocacy of the IAASM
- Strengthen individual and corporate membership, with increasing cultural diversity of new members and retention of existing members
- Manage finances through effective governance and leadership, to ensure fiscal accountability and economic stability
